I finally did it! I have been taking college classes off and on since 1997. Yes, that is a long time! No matter where I went to school at any age, I always struggled with math. I finally came to find out why in my last semester of math, taking Math 105. I always wondered why, no matter how carefully I input numbers in my calculator or thought they were written correctly on my paper, my answer was wrong. I just thought I was dumb. My teacher stood over my shoulder one day watching me work and told me my problem. No, I am not dumb but have been struggling with math dyslexia all these years. What a relief! It explains why I have struggled, don't understand APR and can't balance a checkbook.
Yes, I graduated, and yes it was a struggle to get through math. I spent countless hours in the library with a very patient and kind tutor named Emma. Despite being young enough to be my child, she worked with me and helped me and never once made me feel stupid. I so much appreciate her and know she will go on to great things! My teacher, Mrs. Beitzel, was a jem too, as well as the sweet librarian Ruth. My family I know missed me too with my many hours away from them. I'm so thankful I had such supportive people at home and school, along with all the people on Facebook and in other areas of my life that supported me. I thank God the most, because I could not have done any of it without him.
What I am going to do with this education I strove so long for remains to be seen, I think I will go back and try to get one more associate degree and then I will be done. No matter what age you are, don't let that, or a disability known or unknown stop you from reaching your goals!
